Awaken the Spirit of the Sports Field with Vibrant Colors
Project Overview
In March 2022, Daguan Architecture was invited by UFIDA Network to renovate a sports arena located at No. 68 Beiqing Road, Haidian District, Beijing, within the UFIDA Software Park. The renovation aimed to fulfill both sports and commercial needs within the park. Unlike traditional large-scale venues, the UFIDA sports center presents a light and simple image. After the upgrade, the facility will fully leverage the park’s supporting services, primarily serving UFIDA and other park enterprise employees. It will offer venues for various sports activities including basketball, badminton, table tennis, and a multifunctional gym.

Planning and Design
Yonyou Network is a global leader in enterprise cloud services and software, committed to driving business and social progress through creativity and technology. During the initial planning phase, the design unified the venue’s visual identity by adopting UFIDA’s signature red and gray as the primary color scheme according to UFIDA’s visual standards. The sports field, gym, and runway areas were highlighted with orange, blue, and green zones respectively. Multi-colored walls with varying color temperatures transition smoothly from one area to another, blending harmoniously to create a cohesive spatial experience.

Facade Renovation
Before renovation, the exterior facade was simple and outdated. To enhance the appearance, the original door size was expanded, and a metal stretch mesh material was extended from the door into the interior. When light passes through the metal mesh vertically, it refracts and transforms the fragmented components into a unique unified form. The red ceiling, rich in color, adds depth to the semi-transparent elements. This design aims to spark curiosity and intrigue about the renovated space, much like the excitement children feel when anticipating the contents of a gift box.

The renovated sports hall entrance features an open, sloping design that faces the public, softening the rigid boundary between the original building and the outside world. Color serves as both a spatial guide and decorative element throughout the space.

The building’s north facade faces a large green space, extending the spatial flow outdoors. The entrance seamlessly integrates with this greenery, creating an open and relaxing atmosphere. An open leisure area at the north entrance invites visitors to enter and fully utilize every corner of the space.

Interior Transformation Strategy
Within budget constraints, sports-themed indoor signage was highlighted as a key design element. This included a runway-inspired VI system, metal stretch mesh signage, and floor markings resembling a track.

The internal functional zones are arranged around a broad “runway” concept that guides and gathers pedestrian flow while linking various spaces. Visitors enter from outside and follow the runway to the first floor coffee and gym areas. Continuing along the “track” leads to the second floor’s badminton and basketball courts, and the runway extends to the third floor’s table tennis area.

As a self-use sports venue within Yonyou Industrial Park, the center not only offers employees various sports options but also serves as a social hub for young people during their leisure time.

Clear and simple floor plans allow visitors to quickly understand the architectural layout. The venue supports a variety of sports and related services. From the outset, multiple perspectives were considered to address users’ needs and possible challenges in various scenarios. Custom icons and signage were designed to create a relaxed spatial connection. Colors are used to define areas, establishing order and dynamic movement through material overlaps and transitions.

The gym’s original arched skylight remains intact. To prevent excessive natural light from interfering with sports activities, a transparent film has been applied to the inside of the glass. This preserves natural lighting while meeting the requirements for badminton and other sports.

Supporting spaces like bathrooms and changing rooms maintain a striking contrast between red and gray. Customized metal mesh partitions and mirror boxes add visual interest, while pendant lights mounted on red brackets introduce dynamic lines against the dark gray ceilings.

About the Project
Starting from the runway concept, the design evolved to embody the spirit of movement and connection throughout the three-floor space. The use of color aims to awaken the energy of the sports field, imagining possible scenes of interaction and resonance with the surrounding landscape. This project envisions sports as a catalyst unlocking infinite future possibilities.
