This project is designed as a multi-generational family home, thoughtfully combining private living areas, communal spaces, and abundant greenery. It accommodates the homeowner, their children, the homeowner’s parents, and aunt. The architect’s concept involves enveloping the living spaces with a double-layered landscape façade, integrated with a vertical garden courtyard.
The building is organized into distinct functional floors: the first floor serves as a public gathering space; the second floor is dedicated to the elderly parents and aunt; the third floor is reserved for the younger family members, accessible via independent stairs and separate external entrances. At the top is a rooftop garden, enhancing the connection with nature.

While respecting each family member’s privacy, the architect cleverly links the three floors through a central garden courtyard. The staircase to the second floor and the aerial corridors on the third floor intersect above this courtyard, encouraging spontaneous interactions among family members. The interior spaces are enriched with water features and tall wooden elements, creating an open-air ambiance indoors.

Under development pressures, the architect persuaded the homeowner to prioritize spatial quality over maximizing floor area. As a result, the home features a grand indoor garden that spans three floors—an uncommon scale that brings greenery within easy reach throughout the house.

The combination of the double-layered landscape façade, indoor water courtyard, three-story high inner courtyard with ventilated skylights, and rooftop garden creates a comfortable microclimate. Despite the house facing west, it remains cool with a gentle breeze. This innovative design adapts tropical residential architecture to Singapore’s dense urban environment, without relying on traditional deep eaves, which are increasingly difficult to implement due to limited land.

The double-layered landscape façade, with its biological synergy and microclimate benefits, demonstrates innovative approaches to tropical architecture within densely built environments like Singapore. The three-story indoor water courtyard, intertwined staircases amidst foliage, and aerial corridors weaving through tree canopies seamlessly bring nature indoors, enriching residents’ everyday lives.
