BIM Architecture: Meditation Pavilion by STUDIOARO

BIM Architecture | Meditation Pavilion/STUDIOARO

The story of this project is deeply connected to the land it occupies and the families who have lived there. For many years, the property served as a vacation retreat and a place to connect with nature, nestled in a region abundant with biodiversity. When the families decided to build more permanent structures, they replaced the traditional houses with a modern residence situated close to the original site.

The new house is beautiful and comfortably accommodates all family members. However, the original house’s site now lies empty. Although unplanned, the bamboo pavilion was built as a tribute to traditional housing and its cultural symbolism. To complement the modern, minimalist style of the new house, the pavilion features a more sculptural and luxurious design.

The pavilion is constructed from various types of bamboo and rattan, incorporating multiple arches and ring beams that form a sturdy base frame. Bamboo strips are split to increase flexibility, allowing them to curve into arches. Ma Jia Zhu bamboo is primarily used in the roof structure and mats, while integrated rattan finishes the surfaces and finer details. The architect also included three openings at the top of the pavilion for natural light and ventilation and temporarily installed a skylight during construction to illuminate the complex geometric grid.

While bamboo is widespread throughout India, finding high-quality bamboo harvested at the right time and processed correctly is challenging. This is essential for constructing durable modern bamboo structures. Many renowned bamboo construction companies worldwide source and process their own bamboo, as does STUDIOARO.

The STUDIOARO team, led by Chief Architect Aroty Panyang, consists of passionate builders skilled in working with natural materials. They source the highest quality mature bamboo and treat it with natural salt, a preservation method that enhances durability for decades, making bamboo suitable for permanent structures.

Bamboo construction yields organic results, which is one of its greatest advantages. Furthermore, modern bamboo structures possess a unique and uplifting character difficult to achieve with traditional materials. The architectural firm believes one of the most compelling aspects of contemporary bamboo architecture is its structural complexity, which inspires awe and wonder in visitors. This meditation pavilion beautifully showcases bamboo’s versatility and aesthetic potential.
