Venue: Seogwipo, the second largest city on Jeju Island, is known for its relaxed atmosphere and abundant natural beauty. The mild climate enhances the area’s appeal. This project site is situated on a small hill offering sweeping views of the distant Pacific Ocean, with Halla Mountain serving as a majestic backdrop. The location is part of a newly developed residential plot grid system.

Client: At the time of signing the design contract, the client was a single neurosurgeon engaged to be married. He had a clear vision and requested bold, angular shapes with a strong, muscular aesthetic. Planning ahead for a family with three children, he asked for a layout that included three children’s bedrooms and a master bedroom for the couple. The final design features eight rooms: four bedrooms, a kitchen, a dining room, and a library/gathering space.

Concept Development: My design process typically begins with a site visit, allowing ideas to emerge naturally. I often let my mind wander and sketch spontaneously. When the right moment arrives, a specific idea, word, or image crystallizes. In this case, the house overlooking the Pacific Ocean emerged as a powerful reflection of the sea. The challenge was to arrange and stack eight rooms of varying sizes within the form of a “Phantom Wave.”

The Eight Rooms: Positioned on a sloping site facing south, all eight rooms benefit from unobstructed views and ample sunlight. The entrance is located on the northern side, marked by a small basalt wall that functions as both an entry marker and a windbreak against Jeju Island’s strong winds. Upon entering, the foyer offers no immediate view of the main living area—you must turn and ascend a few steps to reveal it.
The living area boasts double-height ceilings, supported by a tilted pillar that holds up the fourth-floor library. Continuing upward via steps and ramps leads to the kitchen and dining area. Further ascent takes you to a future child’s bedroom. This progression culminates at the top floor, where the library offers stunning views of the Pacific Ocean. The library’s north-south axis features tiered seating and a door to a balcony facing Mount Halla. This dynamic stacking of spaces, reminiscent of solid waves, completes the design.

Material Choice: Exposed concrete pressed with wooden boards has been my go-to material for many projects on Jeju Island. It stands up well to the harsh winds and complements the abundant basalt in the landscape. This approach gives the impression that the new building has long been a part of its environment.
