BIM Architecture: Innovative Use of Perforated Panels at Thousand Plateau Observation Deck by Emer sys

The design of this observation deck turns the act of climbing into a captivating visual and physical journey. Surrounding sidewalks and open areas naturally draw attention to the deck, extending the city’s rhythm to the rooftop and open platforms that stretch in multiple directions. This design invites visitors to discover new perspectives of Chunchuan Lake.

A winding staircase and cantilevered floors offer optimized views in various directions across Chunchuan Lake. From the observation station’s summit, visitors enjoy an unobstructed panorama. Unlike the expansive viewpoint from the open platform, descending offers a more intimate experience, blending visitors with the stunning scenery. Viewing the lake through small windows along the stairs and corridors inside the deck evokes the feeling of admiring a painting in a museum.

The observation deck is clad with curved aluminum panels that deliver a rich visual and tactile experience. The perforated aluminum sheets feature holes resembling thousands of water droplets, ranging from 0.5 to 3 centimeters in diameter. At eye level, these perforations maintain a 70% open ratio, creating either a closed or open appearance depending on the viewing angle. This design generates an ambiance of tilted light beams inside and a sense of intangible volume on the exterior. Notably, the wave-like form of the perforated panels symbolizes the iconic, gentle yet powerful landmark by Chunchuan Lake’s shore.

The inward-bent perforated aluminum panels provide structural stiffness, reducing the need for extensive supports for the corridor’s floor slab. These surfaces create captivating light effects—including reflections, transmissions, and overlaps—that vary with the viewing angle. Combined with the substantial concrete core inside, these dynamic effects produce a vivid sense of depth and complexity throughout the day.
