BIM technology was recognized as a key national science and technology support project during China’s 11th Five Year Plan and is expected to receive increased emphasis during the 12th Five Year Plan. According to a 2011 research report on BIM application in engineering construction, awareness of BIM in China has risen to 87%. However, actual usage remains relatively low. Approximately 39% of organizations utilize BIM software, with design firms leading the adoption. The Chinese construction industry has seen BIM progress from initial theoretical research to practical implementation, with numerous projects applying BIM to varying degrees and stages.
Currently, BIM is primarily applied in a limited number of complex, large-scale construction projects in China. Notable examples include the Shanghai Center Building, the German National Pavilion at the Shanghai World Expo, Suzhou Xinghai Life Plaza, Yinchuan Railway Station, and the upcoming Shanghai Disneyland. This limited application stems from BIM’s recent introduction in China, alongside a relatively weak research foundation and theoretical framework. Additionally, challenges such as coordination of relevant regulations, software technology support, and the process of concept adoption among stakeholders hinder BIM’s development. Consequently, establishing a BIM-enabled construction team involves high costs, restricting its use to only some large-scale projects and specific construction phases. To date, only the Shanghai Center has fully implemented BIM throughout the entire project lifecycle, marking the first such case in China.
At present, BIM is mainly used for dynamic 3D modeling. Beyond 3D visualization, it supports construction execution and collision detection during equipment installation—for instance, collision checks of pipelines at Suzhou Xinghai Life Plaza. BIM is also employed in construction project management tasks such as scheduling and cost control.
