HENN Haiyin Architecture has designed a new master plan for a 300,000 square meter park at City University of Hong Kong’s Dongguan campus in Guangdong. The project will be constructed in two phases: the iconic Central Library is set to be completed by 2023, while academic facilities, including student dormitories, will be finished by 2025. This new campus, named “Dongguan CityU,” is the third park of City University of Hong Kong on the mainland. It aims to connect researchers and industrial partners within the Greater Bay Area Science and Technology Innovation Corridor, creating a vibrant and diverse university district in the Pearl River Delta. The campus will also host schools of science, engineering, business, and medicine.

The Dongguan CityU campus will collaborate closely with two key research initiatives in Dongguan: the China Spallation Neutron Source (CSNS) and the Songshan Lake Materials Laboratory. Together, these institutions will leverage Hong Kong’s advanced research capabilities and Shenzhen’s robust industrial output to establish a cutting-edge technology development zone.

The campus design features a parallelogram grid as its overall organizational structure. Although bisected by roads, the master plan forms an “L”-shaped layout that extends outward, with a large elevated platform spanning above the roadways. The campus integrates lakes and seamlessly connects buildings to the surrounding landscape. The L-shaped “spine” links the four colleges, sports facilities, and administrative buildings of the West Campus with the laboratories, classrooms, dining halls, and media centers of the East Campus. Additionally, dormitories are located on the campus edge, providing students with convenient accommodation in the city center.

HENN Haiyin Architecture won the design competition in mid-2020 and plans to complete the overall project by 2025 in two phases. The Central Library, recently topped out, features a striking cantilevered block approximately 50 meters long, making it a distinctive landmark for the campus. The construction of laboratories, classrooms, and related facilities will be evenly distributed across both phases, allowing for greater design flexibility.
With offices in China and Germany, HENN Haiyin Architecture’s latest representative project is the Dongguan CityU campus. The firm has also completed several notable university and research facility projects, such as Hangzhou Xihu University, which opened this year, Zalando BHQ-Z Building topped out in March 2022, as well as the ongoing Sino French Aviation University and Zoomlion Heavy Industry Headquarters.
