Niaoyan Burn is situated in Huadengfang, Nanjing, conveniently serving the commercial crowd of the CBD area. As the third location of the Niaoyan brand in Nanjing, this outlet stands apart from the first store’s fresh Japanese style. The design draws inspiration from the ambiance of a traditional tavern and infuses a distinctive fireworks atmosphere into the new store layout. A central bar has been created to deliver a unique Japanese-style bird grilling experience. Furthermore, the overall aesthetic takes cues from the structure of the Niaoyan residence and the design of paper umbrellas, maintaining a fresh dining ritual through thoughtful color coordination and interior decor.

Transforming the Space into a Unique Japanese Cuisine Brewery
The project is located beneath the escalator on the shopping mall’s ground floor. Faced with challenges such as limited lighting, an unappealing landscape, and issues with foot traffic, the primary task for the design team was to overcome these site limitations.

The design team adopted the vibrant “vermilion” color inspired by the Japanese torii gate as the primary palette for the space. From the exterior facade to the interior environment, details are crafted to evoke a sense of “order,” creating spatial continuity. The layered wooden structures paired with striking red elements deliver a rich and harmonious visual impact. Upon entering through the outdoor display area, guests are welcomed by the central bar counter at the heart of the space. An elegant wine cabinet, framed in rose gold, infuses a retro energy and blends seamlessly with the smooth curved wall, forming a unified color scheme. Above, an umbrella-shaped frame crowns the space, enhancing a bright and layered atmosphere that flows throughout.

The Breath of Landscape Design
For the exterior facade, curved walls are used to create distinctive local scenery, introducing visual barriers through overlapping materials that subtly conceal and reveal. This blurring of boundaries imparts a breathable, open feel between the interior and exterior spaces. The Japanese-inspired scenery extends beneath the semi-circular “umbrella surface,” allowing the sensory border of the space to transcend material partitions and guide guests’ gaze inward.

Inside, the design team connected the top-level decorative architecture of the core bar area with the concept of the “Japanese paper umbrella.” Slender wooden structures are arranged in a sequential manner, blending modern materials with a delicate, gradual aesthetic. The staggered arrangement of public and private spaces is reflected in the multi-dimensional wooden framework and ceiling mirrors, creating a dialogue between the restaurant space and its visitors, as well as reinforcing the brand’s presence.

Ceremonies Beyond the Torii Gate
The design team highlights the harmony between the Niaoyan brand and Japanese culinary culture through precise structural details and careful material choices within the spatial concept. This approach echoes the Niaoyan tradition visually and functionally, crafting a multi-layered scene that commands special attention to guests’ experiences upon entering. Structural decorations serve as signals, inviting visitors into a distinct spatial journey that transcends the ordinary, conveying deeper spiritual and cultural impressions.

Besides honoring the architectural structure, the venue’s storytelling is driven by the interplay of light and shadow. The design team meticulously refined numerous spatial details to craft a captivating atmosphere that gradually immerses guests in the experience.
