The finals of the Beijing Workers’ Vocational Skills Competition for Building Information Modeling (BIM) Technicians, along with the National Beijing Division Selection Competition, recently took place at the Urban Construction Group Training Center. Thirty finalists competed for 15 top spots, and after centralized closed training organized by the committee, three contestants will be chosen to represent Beijing at the national level.
This event is hosted by the Beijing Federation of Trade Unions and the Beijing Municipal Human Resources and Social Security Bureau. It is co-organized by the Beijing Construction Union, the Beijing Industrial (National Defense) Union, and the Beijing Workers’ Technical Association, with Beijing Urban Construction Group Co., Ltd. serving as the organizer.
The competition’s theme, “Innovation Drives Development, Talent Shapes the Future,” reflects its comprehensive approach. Contestants were tested on three key areas: BIM model construction, BIM deliverables, and BIM construction stage management, combining both theoretical knowledge and practical skills.
Beginning in July 2022, the competition progressed through three stages: preliminary, semi-final, and final. Thirty contestants from ten organizations—including Beijing Urban Construction, China Construction Engineering Group, China Construction First Engineering Bureau, China Construction Second Engineering Bureau, Jinyu Group, China Construction Seventh Engineering Bureau, China Construction Eighth Engineering Bureau, China Construction Strait, and China Construction Research Institute—advanced to the finals. Ultimately, 15 outstanding contestants were selected, with three moving forward to represent Beijing nationally.
As the competition organizer, the Urban Construction Group formed 10 dedicated working groups to manage tasks and coordinate the event’s progress. They held more than ten on-site coordination meetings, overcoming challenges related to venue, software, and equipment. Preparation was completed efficiently within a tight timeframe. Notably, the competition introduced an independently developed examination system for the first time, significantly enhancing the overall quality of the event.
Contestant Diao Xinyu shared, “This skills competition has given me a chance to expand my horizons and strive for higher honors. After the preliminary and semi-final rounds, my practical BIM skills have greatly improved. I’m grateful for such a high-standard and rigorous competition. Returning to work, I will apply what I have learned, turning the ‘craftsman spirit’ into innovation and creativity, contributing to and showcasing my achievements on this new journey.”
Wang Tianzhu, Chairman of the Beijing Construction Union, emphasized the importance of BIM technology, stating, “BIM is a core component in the development of smart cities, integrating and supporting every phase from planning and surveying to design, construction, and operation. It enables full information integration, visualization, intelligence, and collaboration on smart construction sites and urban environments. This vocational skills competition opens new pathways to cultivate skilled talent, aiming to develop more BIM experts. We hope to enhance employees’ professional abilities through ongoing training and competitions, build a highly skilled workforce, and advance technological innovation and engineering practice from BIM to smart construction.”
