The length of bolts significantly impacts the procurement process. Here’s how Tekla determines bolt length:
Once you create bolts in the model, Tekla first calculates the minimum required bolt length. Then, it selects a bolt from the bolt library whose length is equal to or greater than this minimum length.

Minimum Bolt Length Calculation:
The minimum bolt length is calculated as the sum of the material thickness, washer thickness, nut thickness, additional length, and supplementary length:
Minimum bolt length = material thickness + washer thickness + nut thickness + additional length + supplementary length
For example, when installing 20 mm diameter TS10.9 bolts through two PL10 plates, an additional 10 mm and a supplementary 20 mm are added to the bolt length.

In this example, the minimum calculated length includes the thickness of shim 1, material thickness, shim 2 thickness, nut thickness, additional length, and supplementary length, totaling:
4mm + 10mm + 10mm + 4mm + 20.7mm + 10mm + 20mm = 78.7mm
Tekla then searches the bolt library for the closest available length. Here, it selects an 80mm bolt, which corresponds to a BOLT20 * 80 torsional shear bolt.
