With the introduction of BIM technology in South Korea, many projects have started adopting this innovative approach. Some notable examples include:
Dongdaemun Design Plaza and Cultural Park
Project Background
Location: Zone 2-1, 7th Street, Yeongjo, Jung-gu, Seoul
Floor area:
Design Plaza: 83,924㎡
Cultural Park: 37,398㎡
Scale: Design Plaza consists of 4 floors above ground and 3 floors underground.
Main facilities:
Design Plaza includes an exhibition hall, museum, education center, multipurpose hall, and more.
Cultural Park features a Theme Exhibition Hall, History Museum, and Art Exhibition Hall.
Total investment: Approximately 422.8 billion Korean won (expected)
BIM Usage and Benefits
As the preliminary design phase neared completion, some designers raised concerns about the constructability of the free-form structures. Construction experts highlighted the limitations of combining traditional 2D designs with partial 3D models and proposed a fully integrated 3D design solution.
Software Used: Rhino, Catia, Revit Architecture, Revit MEP, Revit Structure, among others.
Application Areas:
1) Construction simulation, optimization, and management
2) 4D simulation
Longren Citizen Sports Park
Project Background
Location: 24-22 Dongshan, Sanjie, Churen District, Longren City
Area:
Building area: 89,700㎡
Land area: 228,920㎡
Scale: 3 floors above ground, 1 floor underground
Main Facilities:
Large sports field with 37,155 seats
Small sports field with 1,811 seats
Bowling stadium featuring 32 lanes
Parking lot accommodating approximately 1,500 vehicles, with over 50% underground
Total investment: Around 167 billion Korean won (expected)
BIM Usage and Benefits
The owner’s basic plan required a comprehensive assessment of land conditions, project schedule, and budget. By accurately incorporating the owner’s intentions and relevant conditions, the project aims for successful completion.
Software Used: Revit Architecture, Revit Structure, AutoCAD Civil 3D, Revit MEP, Navisworks, Tekla, MIDAS, Robobat, and others.

Application Areas:
Preliminary Design
1) Earthwork volume simulation and analysis
2) Improve communication among owners, designers, and stakeholders
3) Provide a foundation for the engineering cost budget
4) Enhance the owner’s understanding of the project
Detailed Design
1) Preparation of plans, sections, and detailed drawings
2) Structural analysis and load calculations
3) Detailed design of steel skeleton connections
4) Collision detection
Construction Phase
1) Development of construction plans, safety management, quality management, and other documentation
2) Detect and resolve conflicts between disciplines and assess construction feasibility
3) Production of construction drawings and detailed blueprints
4) Application in prefabricated component manufacturing
5) Construction simulation
