In recent years, China’s BIM industry has rapidly developed, leading to the introduction of BIM standards at national, industry, and local levels. Based on the BIM-related standards issued by various Chinese authorities, the following definitions of BIM have been established:

Key national standards include the Guiding Opinions on Promoting the Application of Building Information Modeling by the Ministry of Housing and Urban-Rural Development, the Research on the Framework of China’s Building Information Modeling Standards, the Unified Standards for the Application of Building Engineering Information Modeling, the National Delivery Standards for Building Engineering Design Information Modeling, and the National Application Standards for Building Engineering Construction Information Modeling.
Local standards have also been developed, such as the Design Standards for Civil Building Information Modeling in Beijing, the BIM Implementation and Management Standards by the Shenzhen Construction and Engineering Bureau, the Shanghai Application Standards for Building Information Modeling, the Shanghai BIM Application Technology Standards for Urban Rail Transit, and the Final Draft Report on the Strategic Implementation of BIM Roadmap in Hong Kong’s construction industry.
On the international front, prominent standards include the Singapore BIM Guidelines, the UK BIM Implementation Standards, and the US National BIM Standards (NBIMS).
Drawing from these various standards, BIM is generally understood as follows:
Building Information Modeling (BIM) is a comprehensive process, encompassing the methods and technologies used to create and utilize digital models that manage and optimize the entire lifecycle of construction projects—from design and construction to operation.
BIM serves as a shared knowledge resource, providing a reliable foundation for all decisions made throughout a facility’s lifecycle, from initial planning and design to eventual demolition. At each project stage, different stakeholders input, extract, update, and modify information within the BIM model to support their roles and facilitate effective collaboration.
While China has established national BIM standards, variations still exist in detailed requirements across different industries.
