The Southern University of Science and Technology Campus Phase II, designed by the French AS Architecture Studio, officially opened in October 2020. This project includes Plot A, the South University Center, and Plot C, which houses the College of Humanities and the Academic Exchange Center.

Plot A: South University of Science and Technology Center
Located at the campus’s west entrance, Plot A occupies a central visual position. A green ecological corridor weaves through various small units, encouraging foot traffic and creating a vibrant and fluid environment. Faculty and students can stroll, socialize, view exhibitions, or simply relax amid the scenery.
The center includes a dining hall, library, and comprehensive service building. The dining area is on the ground floor, featuring a green dining space enclosed by a tall glass curtain wall overlooking the garden. Each restaurant has an independent entrance, allowing visitors to choose freely without intersecting foot traffic.
The library and service building volumes gradually rise, breaking through the green corridor and opening up indoor views to the surrounding landscape. Both structures share an architectural language with the dining center, forming a cohesive complex.

The design features a well-connected circular system that seamlessly integrates buildings with diverse functions. The green pedestrian corridors interlace to form lively public spaces, while a thoughtfully designed microclimate sets the South University Center apart from other campus buildings.
Faculty and students can easily move between buildings and enjoy both indoor and outdoor activities sheltered from harsh weather. The exterior appears wrapped in warm-toned curtains, exuding understated elegance. The regular pattern of stone, lightweight clay panels, and glass guides visitors naturally into the interior spaces.

Plot C: College of Humanities and Academic Exchange Center
The Humanities College and Academic Exchange Center are thoughtfully arranged to follow the natural mountain terrain, creating a small-scale community. Their spatial and formal qualities draw inspiration from traditional Lingnan gardens, interpreting regional culture through a modern architectural approach.
The two buildings—one to the south and one to the north, differing in height—compose an ecological and organic community along the campus’s cultural landscape axis, harmonizing with the surrounding mountains and scenery.

The School of Humanities comprises three departments: Humanities, Social Sciences, and Chinese Studies, along with shared classrooms and reading rooms. These departments are housed in three independent volumes, aligned in a straight line following the mountain’s contour and connected by corridors.
Architecturally, the courtyards enclosed by the building eaves offer a tranquil academic atmosphere, reflecting the Lingnan tradition of integrating architecture with courtyards. Each department occupies a building with its own inner courtyard, where offices and classrooms overlook wetlands and mountains externally, and serene courtyards internally.

The Academic Exchange Center organizes its diverse functions around an inner courtyard. It shares many functional connections with the Professor Club, which are integrated into its design.
The building’s entrance plaza sits on a terrace connected to the eastern campus road by a landscaped staircase. Oriented north-south, the courtyard-style layout reflects the traditional Lingnan architectural spirit. The façade features gray bricks, sloping roofs, and eaves, showcasing classic Lingnan elements with a modern rhythmic reinterpretation.

Marking the 10th anniversary of Southern University of Science and Technology, the studio envisioned the Phase II campus as an opportunity to create more inspiring public spaces. These spaces encourage relaxation and learning, allowing teachers and students to subtly experience life through education—integrating “travel” and “learning” seamlessly.
We hope that Southern University of Science and Technology’s future will be even more brilliant and prosperous.
