BIM Q&A | Benefits of Using BIM Technology for Site Layout During Construction

(1) Promote standardization in construction site layouts. Due to limited land availability, construction sites often adopt overlapping operations. Improper placement of equipment and inadequate management on-site have caused disorder and increased construction challenges. To minimize safety risks and ensure efficient construction, a standardized site layout is essential. BIM technology enables precise calculation of construction areas and material transport paths, simulates temporary building locations, and optimizes traffic routes and pipeline arrangements. This improves site utilization, enhances worker safety, prevents unreasonable setups, and reduces negative impacts from overlapping site operations.

(2) Optimize and select simulation-based construction process plans. Large-scale projects often feature complex structures, vast scopes, and long durations. Traditional construction methods rely on comparing options and selecting the best one, which can make balancing quality a challenge. By applying BIM technology to create virtual construction environments, 3D simulations can demonstrate potential scenarios during construction. This approach helps analyze and optimize plans, allocate resources efficiently, reduce rework on-site, ensure feasibility, save costs, strengthen quality control, and ultimately improve construction efficiency.

(3) Efficiently utilize construction resources and reduce material consumption. Construction resources encompass manpower, materials, and finances. Proper management of these resources boosts economic benefits. BIM’s 3D models serve as comprehensive information databases reflecting project details. Coordinating data from components such as steel bars, formwork, and concrete with construction schedules provides reliable support for machinery deployment and material procurement, minimizing secondary handling and cutting material costs.

Additionally, BIM’s automated calculation capabilities enable rapid analysis of components. Loading BIM models allows for precise material quantity calculations and accurate engineering quantity lists, supporting detailed cost estimations. This reduces human errors, enhances construction efficiency, and scientifically controls budget expenses.

(4) Apply visual technology for technical disclosure to enhance project quality. Technical disclosure is a critical management task before construction begins, ensuring smooth project progression. Traditional disclosure methods rely on drawings and step-by-step explanations by technicians, which can lead to misunderstandings or omissions. BIM technology enables visual disclosure through 3D panoramic images and on-site simulation operations. Gathering all construction personnel beforehand allows for a clearer understanding of the construction environment, reinforces key points, and improves both the quality and efficiency of the building process through more effective technical communication.
