During the traditional design phase, SketchUp is commonly used to create an initial 3D model of the building. However, due to limitations in the software, these models cannot be directly integrated into other BIM platforms. Currently, the leading BIM software for architectural design is Revit. Revit offers extensive capabilities, including a component family library, rendering, and analysis tools. Most importantly, it supports data export in IFC standard formats. Designers utilize BIM software to build models, and with its visualization features, they can showcase the building’s appearance, facade design, spatial hierarchy, and site layout to clients after completing the scheme stage. Additionally, the software enables analysis of sunlight exposure, wind conditions, thermal radiation, and more.
① Program Presentation
By modeling the preliminary design and leveraging BIM’s visualization capabilities, the building’s appearance and facade can be clearly communicated. BIM software allows designers to tailor presentations based on local planning regulations, cultural and geographic contexts, and the client’s specific requirements. Beyond the building itself, it’s essential to integrate the design with the surrounding terrain and local climate. When combined with Geographic Information System (GIS) data, BIM models effectively represent topographical details such as elevation changes, slopes, and neighboring structures. This gives designers a comprehensive understanding of the site conditions. Furthermore, initial traffic simulations for construction projects can be performed, providing valuable data to clients that support route optimization during later construction and operational phases.
② Building Performance Analysis
At the scheme stage, the BIM model also enables preliminary performance assessments of various building components, including sunlight exposure, energy consumption, and wind environment analysis. These performance evaluations are crucial reviews carried out during early design. By creating an accurate 3D virtual model with BIM software, designers can simulate, analyze, and calculate these factors within the platform. This approach ensures more precise results and allows for targeted adjustments, ultimately facilitating the next stages of the project.
