Wuhan Huoshenshan Hospital, located on Zhiyinhu Avenue in Caidian District, spans a total construction area of 33,900 square meters and accommodates 1,000 beds. Remarkably, the entire process—from design to construction and payment—was completed in just 10 days, earning it the title of the “speed of China.” This extraordinary achievement was made possible by the relentless efforts of frontline construction workers and the support of advanced construction technologies.
At the project’s outset, given the tight schedule and heavy workload, prefabricated construction combined with Building Information Modeling (BIM) technology played a crucial role in ensuring timely completion. The BIM model was developed in just three days under the leadership of Dean Liu Mengliang from Hunan Transportation Vocational and Technical College.
Huoshenshan Hospital features a box-type design using a light steel structure. The construction process began with assembling the steel skeleton, followed by splicing, assembling, and installing the box-type units, as illustrated in Figure 1. Traditional construction methods would have involved extensive on-site concrete pouring, which could cause significant delays. Instead, prefabricated building components were used extensively to maximize industrial production efficiency. After the external units were spliced together, the entire structure was lifted as one piece. This approach interspersed on-site assembly with large-scale lifting operations to optimize construction speed and efficiency.

BIM models simulate and visualize building management throughout various stages, including design, construction, and operation. This technology is particularly effective in reducing errors, omissions, clashes, and defects during construction, thereby improving accuracy. The BIM model developed by Liu Mengliang’s team was instrumental in minimizing mistakes and ensuring that Wuhan Huoshenshan Hospital was completed on schedule.
The integration of BIM technology with prefabricated construction was a key factor in the hospital’s rapid assembly, representing another remarkable “Chinese miracle.” Moreover, it highlights the significant value of applying BIM technology in modern construction projects.
