The Victorian era (1837-1901) marked the height of the British Industrial Revolution and the expansion of the British Empire. It was a time rich with inventors and adventurers. The clash between the classical restoration aesthetics of the palace and the modernity brought by industrialization created a unique blend of diversity, rationality, and intrigue that continues to captivate. Inspired by this familiar yet distant era, the owner of Hall Bar commissioned TRIOSTUDIO Sanlishe to design the entire bar space, crafting a distinctive and refined social haven for the city’s vibrant community.

△ Space Overview
Located on Huadengfang, Jiangdong Middle Road in Nanjing, Hall is a multi-functional leisure bar specializing in fine wines. Its distinct brand positioning aligns perfectly with the evolving demands of new consumer trends in the central business district of this emerging urban area. Beyond serving drinks and providing a casual bar atmosphere, the design team worked closely with the client to embrace a “bar + retail + performance” concept as the core strategy. Central to this design is the integration of live jazz performances, with seating and functional zones arranged around the performance area, creating an elegant and dynamic ambiance fostered by the classic jazz trio format.

During live jazz trio performances, the rhythmic sounds of “TING TING TANG TANG” cleverly echo the Chinese pronunciation of “hall,” reinforcing the brand’s vision of creating a unique and refined social hub within the space.

The design team focused on crafting a refined spatial texture, drawing inspiration from Victorian architectural styles. They embraced the cross-axis layout to maintain spatial hierarchy and incorporated detailed local ornamentation. An arched roof frame, without emphasizing excessive ceiling height, highlights structural beauty that enhances the space’s distinctive character. Visitors move between observation and interaction, wandering the edge of reason and emotion, feeling as if gently intoxicated while reliving the grandeur of a bygone era.

Device and Space Relationship
At the heart of the bar sits a hand-cranked rotating fan-shaped metal device, serving as the visual and design centerpiece. This intricate element blends delicate, luxurious architectural decoration with the vintage Victorian bar theme. It creates a highly recognizable focal point, elevating the space’s identity and enhancing brand communication while adding an element of fun and engagement.
