BIM Q&A | What Is the Essential Software for BIM Applications? Is It Just Modeling Software?

The core of BIM application software lies in modeling tools, commonly known as “BIM Authorship Software.” This software forms the foundation of BIM methodology. Globally, there are four major BIM core modeling software systems, developed by companies such as Autodesk, Bentley, Graphisoft/Nemetschek AG, and Dassault/Gerry Technology.

BIM Q&A | What is the core of BIM application software? Is it BIM modeling software?

(1) Autodesk: Autodesk is the world’s largest provider of 2D and 3D design and engineering software. In 2002, Autodesk acquired Revit Technology and rebranded the product as Autodesk Revit. After nearly two decades of development, Autodesk Revit has become one of the most recognized BIM software internationally and is widely used in the domestic construction industry. Revit adopts a comprehensive and innovative BIM approach, enabling free-form modeling, parametric design, and early design analysis. Its software suite includes three specialized modules: architecture, structure, and mechanical, electrical, and plumbing (MEP). Beyond modeling during planning and design stages, Revit also serves as a platform for BIM information exchange during construction and operation phases.

(2) Bentley Systems: Bentley offers architecture, structure, and equipment modeling software developed in the United States. Their software facilitates integration across design, engineering management, analysis, construction, and operation throughout the entire project lifecycle. Bentley’s solutions are widely applied in infrastructure projects such as roads, bridges, and municipal engineering, as well as industrial projects including various types of factories, demonstrating their strength in large-scale developments.

(3) ArchiCAD: ArchiCAD is a product of Graphisoft, which was acquired by Nemetschek in 2007. Following this acquisition, ArchiCAD, Allplan, and Vectorworks were grouped under one BIM software system. ArchiCAD is recognized as one of the earliest influential BIM core modeling tools. Allplan mainly targets German-speaking markets, while Vectorworks has a substantial user base in the United States.

(4) Dassault Systemes: Represented by CATIA, a French software originally designed for industrial manufacturing sectors like aerospace, aviation, and automotive, CATIA excels in large-scale geometric modeling, visualization, and information management. DigitalProject is a parametric BIM modeling software tailored specifically for the construction industry by Gerry Technology, built on the CATIA platform.

Currently, in the domestic BIM market, Autodesk Revit holds a significant share due to its comprehensive features, reasonable pricing, and user interface similarities with AutoCAD. It is popular among architectural design firms, research institutions, and related universities. However, not every engineering project suits this software system. Generally, Autodesk Revit is preferred for civil buildings; Bentley Systems is better suited for industrial buildings and infrastructure projects, while CATIA and DigitalProject are ideal for complex, irregular building designs.
