Unprecedented Architecture
IBUKU Architecture Firm is dedicated to developing a new design language that empowers individuals to create unique designs and complete their own architectural journeys. Today, their architects have realized an extraordinary structure using this innovative language. This project goes beyond being a bamboo building; it represents a pioneering example of lightweight architecture for the future.

The “Arc” is the latest building on the prestigious Green School campus in Bali, Indonesia. With a 12-year history, this school is celebrated for pushing boundaries and expanding horizons. As the newest landmark in its legacy, the “Arc” elevates the standards of sustainable educational architecture worldwide through its innovative design.
This pioneering structure spans 19 meters and consists of a series of interwoven bamboo arches, each standing 14 meters tall. These arches are connected by saddle-shaped mesh structures, enabling them to “defy” gravity through hyperbolic paraboloid geometry.

The “Arc” is also a remarkable engineering achievement. After months of rigorous research and collaboration between architects and engineers, the final structure showcases exquisite design details that exemplify IBUKU’s dedication to pushing architectural boundaries.

The concept behind the “Arc” is unprecedented, reflecting the boldness and optimism of architects embracing innovative design. As designers, we possessed the creativity and perseverance required to explore and find the solutions necessary for this project’s success.

The Bali Green School “Arc” symbolizes a new era of organic architecture, featuring a 19-meter span arched structure interconnected with a saddle-shaped grid. We collaborated with Jorg Stamm and Atelier One to design a healthy environment and sports facility for this extraordinary campus community.

Design Inspired by Nature
The “Arc” incorporates one of nature’s most effective design strategies: creating expansive spaces with minimal structural elements. Similar to how ribs in the human thoracic cavity are stabilized by a tensioned layer of muscles and skin, the arched structure is secured by a saddle-shaped mesh under tension.
Though it appears that the grid lightly floats between the arches, it actually supports them, blending structural integrity with visual lightness. This approach fosters an intimate atmosphere and unique aesthetic between physical support and visual perception.

The grid structure acts as the roof’s surface, providing stiffness through its hyperbolic paraboloid form. It prevents buckling and works synergistically with the arches to create an efficient, flexible structure. This design allows the building to bend under load, redistributing forces and reducing stress on individual components.
— Neil Thomas, Director, Atelier One

This innovative design abandons traditional geometric layouts, achieving a balanced structural state that significantly reduces the amount of materials needed. The result is a spacious interior with an ultra-thin, truss-like structure that maintains unobstructed sightlines throughout the campus.
