The full English term for BIM is Building Information Modeling, which is commonly translated as Building Information Modeling in China. Currently, BIM technology is still in its early stages of development in China, and the Unified Standard for Building Information Modeling Applications is still being prepared. Therefore, this article primarily references the definitions outlined in the National BIM Standard (NBIMS) from the United States.
According to the National BIM Standard, BIM consists of three main components:

First, BIM represents a building model that includes digital representations of both the physical and functional characteristics of the structure.
Second, BIM serves as a shared knowledge resource that enables comprehensive information sharing about construction projects, providing robust data support throughout the project lifecycle.
Third, BIM facilitates collaboration among all parties involved in the construction and development process—from design teams to owners and contractors—enhancing both efficiency and quality through coordinated teamwork.
Throughout the entire construction process, active cooperation between all stakeholders—including designers, owners, and construction teams—is essential to achieve project goals. Supported by BIM technology, when issues arise during construction, involved parties convene coordination meetings to analyze problems and make informed decisions.
Typically, design-phase communication gaps between designers and stakeholders lead to challenges that later impact construction. BIM, as a lifecycle-based modeling technology, fosters collaboration early in the design stage and generates coordinated data to support the project.
For example, traditional methods often result in conflicts during HVAC pipeline layout because each participant prepares separate construction drawings. These conflicts can severely affect construction quality and progress. However, with BIM technology, coordinated data production through collaborative efforts significantly reduces such conflicts and related issues.
