Navisworks is a 3D/4D design and review software tailored for project lifecycle management in the construction, factory, and shipping industries. It supports all major CAD file formats on the market and offers a programmable user interface. Originally developed by Navisworks in the UK, the software was acquired by Autodesk in 2007. Following further development, it was integrated with the Revit series to form Autodesk’s comprehensive BIM solution. The typical workflow involves creating a core BIM model using Revit, simulating virtual construction with Navisworks, and optionally utilizing 3DS Max for advanced animations or visual presentations.
Navisworks processes design data generated by software like AutoCAD and Revit to produce complete construction simulation animations. This allows project stakeholders to view the project as a continuous whole, minimizing potential issues throughout the process, boosting productivity, and optimizing every stage—from design decisions and building implementation to performance prediction, equipment installation, and project operation.
The Navisworks product lineup consists of three main editions: Navisworks Manage, Navisworks Simulate, and Navisworks Freedom.
Navisworks Manage offers real-time visualization and supports users in verifying time and spatial coordination. It enhances site and workflow planning by identifying and eliminating issues early in the process. By effectively detecting, checking, and reporting potential clashes within 3D project models, design and construction professionals can anticipate and avoid problems before construction begins. The software also enables users to navigate and explore complex 3D models along with all embedded project information. It merges multiple 3D data formats into a unified, realistic building information model for comprehensive viewing and analysis.
Navisworks Simulate provides advanced tools for project analysis, simulation, and information exchange. It supports quick importing of materials, quantities, and lighting data from existing 3D models. The software enables full 4D simulation and realistic object animation, effectively conveying design intent, illustrating concepts, and deepening understanding of the proposed designs.
Autodesk Navisworks Freedom is a free viewer for NWD and DWF™ file formats. It allows users to freely view all simulation content and drawings saved in the NWD format by Navisworks Review, Simulate, or Manage. Freedom offers design professionals an efficient means to communicate by enabling easy, secure, and smooth review of NWD project files. It facilitates sharing design intentions, collaboratively reviewing project proposals, exchanging analysis results, and promotes effective teamwork.
