This renovation project is inspired by a 270-degree panoramic view of the lake. It integrates multi-level white slices above the original building volume, creating a continuous, roaming pathway from the lake surface to the sky. This design connects various viewing platforms across different levels, offering a unique three-dimensional viewing experience.
Indoor and outdoor areas are seamlessly linked, introducing diverse functions that breathe new life into the city. Upon completion, the site will serve as a vibrant destination for sightseeing and leisure at Jinhai Lake.
Located within Shanghai Fish Ring Lake Park in Fengxian District, the project holds a significant landscape position. It involves the S4 building, which boasts a 270-degree lake view, alongside the S3 and S2 buildings situated along the lake embankment road.
The design follows a phased and graded renovation approach. For Building S4 facing the lake, a gentle intervention strategy preserves much of the original structure while focusing on local space renovations. Meanwhile, the operational S3 and S2 buildings will undergo exterior façade renovations to establish a cohesive lakeside appearance.

Before renovation, Building S4 was a closed, four-story commercial structure facing the lake, characterized by an uninviting facade and unusual colors. The renovation focuses on enhancing the relationship between the landscape and viewing experience by opening up the facade and reducing indoor space in select areas. This creates a viewing platform oriented towards the lake.
Seven white slices are inserted on the lake-facing side at varying heights, orientations, and angles. Some slices extend as cantilevers from the original platforms, while others are tilted and integrated within the existing architectural framework. The topmost slice tilts and cantilevers 10 meters from the original structure, serving as the highest point of the entire system.
These white slices form an independent roaming path outside the building’s interior. Visitors can start at the ground level and ascend this engaging lakeside structure along a winding route. This path links functional spaces across different heights and unites isolated viewing platforms into a cohesive whole.

The functional spaces on all levels are situated on scenic platforms overlooking the lake, offering panoramic views from above. The stairs and platforms intertwine with the original structural framework, creating an interlocking spatial logic that fosters a rich and spontaneous spatial experience.

The roaming path extends to the roof, creating an activity space framed by lake views. Roof equipment and pipe wells are carefully concealed. The raised roof, staggered platforms, and winding paths enrich the roof’s functionality and stimulate more engaging interactions and activities.

The placement of white slices and roaming paths establishes a connection between the building and its surrounding environment. The building’s multiple levels and roofs interact dynamically, breaking away from its original closed and isolated state. It now serves as a landscape container and the main visual focal point of Jinhai Park.
The building’s north side features a setback, where the renovation extends the sliced elements to form a micro square and grandstand facing inward. The building’s former red and white facade has been replaced with white hairline aluminum panels and plain concrete slices, creating a unified and diverse spatial image.

The S3 and S2 buildings along Hudi Road currently function as wedding company offices and luxury hotels. Their renovation focuses on exterior upgrades, aiming to create a cohesive visual effect with Building S4. Post-renovation, the facades of all three buildings will form a continuous visual system characterized by twisting horizontal lines and dynamic surfaces, resembling white ripples on water.
