The Jinan Zhonghai Plaza Huanyu City project received the Best BIM Architectural Design Award in the 2012 “Innovation Cup” BIM Design Competition, organized jointly by the China Association for Surveying and Mapping and Autodesk. As a large-scale complex, the project faced numerous challenges from the schematic design phase through to construction drawing development, including multiple height variations, intricate spatial interweaving, and difficulties coordinating various disciplines.

Site Data Analysis Based on BIM Models: Accurate site analysis is the fundamental basis for all design concepts. However, during the early planning stages, Huayi Design often encountered difficulties acquiring effective terrain data. Creating solid terrain models not only demanded significant material resources but also failed to meet the requirements for detailed data refinement. By integrating software such as AutoCAD Civil 3D and Autodesk Revit with Google Maps and planning design files, the team achieved precise terrain data modeling and more efficient site data analysis early in the schematic phase, establishing a strong foundation for design development.
Energy Analysis Using BIM Models: Autodesk Project Vasari, an energy analysis tool closely integrated with Autodesk Revit, was utilized to ensure the scheme’s low-carbon footprint, comfort, and rationality. After completing the main conceptual massing model, Huayi Design imported the Revit volume model along with equipment selections and geographic information into Autodesk Project Vasari. This allowed them to intuitively adjust and refine the building form. Through comprehensive data analysis and scheme comparison, the most effective design solution was identified. Additionally, green design assessments were conducted directly in the cloud, enabling clear visualization of energy consumption comparisons. Simulations of solar radiation, sun path, and wind environments played a crucial role in evaluating and selecting the optimal design strategies.
