The “Three Pavilions” project at the Shandong Provincial Capital Cultural and Art Center earned notable recognition, including the third prize in the 2012 National BIM (Building Information Modeling) Competition, the Best BIM Collaboration Award in the 2012 “Innovation Cup” BIM Design Competition, and the third prize in the Professional Group Building BIM Direction Award at the 2012 National 3D Competition Finals. As a flagship event of the 10th Art Festival, this project faced several challenges: multiple design stakeholders, tight deadlines, complex spatial relationships, numerous external folds and irregular surfaces, difficult spatial positioning, and intricate equipment management. These factors posed significant challenges to the design process.

To address these challenges, the project team at Shandong Tongyuan Design Group Co., Ltd. leveraged experiences from leading design firms both domestically and internationally to establish a dedicated BIM design team. By implementing BIM technology, they facilitated design scheme adjustments, precise spatial coordinate positioning, and detailed design drawings. The approach focused on resolving conflicts across multiple disciplines, coordinating comprehensive pipeline layouts, maintaining high-quality drawings throughout the process, and optimizing the overall design. Furthermore, BIM applications extended into specialized areas such as landscape design optimization and virtual reality simulations of interior decoration, laying the groundwork for subsequent construction and operational phases.
Visual Design and Optimization Using the BIM Model: The Three Pavilions’ functional buildings were designed as a unified volume, making both the overall appearance and interior spatial planning complex tasks. The BIM model visually represented design outcomes, providing a solid foundation for visual design efforts. Early in the planning phase, three building models and a site model were created from plan data to refine the design. Autodesk Navisworks was used to virtually explore key indoor spaces of the three buildings, allowing for evaluation of the plan’s rationality.
Sustainable Design Enabled by the BIM Model: With growing national emphasis on green building and sustainable design, building performance analysis has become an essential early-stage consideration. Utilizing software such as Autodesk Ecotect and Autodesk Project Vasari, the team conducted simulations including wind tunnel tests, sunlight and shadow analysis, visibility studies, as well as assessments of lighting, thermal, and acoustic environments for both the overall structures and specific areas within the three pavilions. These analyses provided critical support and guidance for environmentally friendly and energy-efficient design decisions.
