Current BIM projects in China have yielded notable results. However, when considering the broader construction engineering design industry, there remain several challenges in BIM implementation:

Many architectural design firms lack strong financial and technical support to advance their BIM initiatives, with a general lack of understanding of BIM concepts. Among those institutions that have started BIM projects, most remain in the early stages of applying BIM technology within the construction sector. To date, BIM usage has been largely limited to software operation, with minimal involvement in collaborative design efforts. It is essential to further promote collaborative design practices and enhance design standards and workflows.
① BIM services often focus on 3D modeling, pipeline integration, and assembly inspection, but they fail to fully leverage BIM’s information advantages. This type of service does not fully align with the true concept of BIM business. Its application emerged early and typically revolves around completing 3D designs using BIM software alone.
② In BIM services that assist design, the value of BIM information becomes more apparent. Various tools that enhance design efficiency are widely adopted. Collaborative design has also gained traction, with key projects involving cooperation with construction teams to optimize construction design drawings. As collaboration improves, architectural firms increasingly emphasize design standards. Although the primary focus remains on BIM software applications, the goal extends beyond 3D modeling to improving design quality and ensuring the feasibility of design documents.
③ Design-oriented BIM services offer enhanced resources for design activities. These include optimizing BIM design processes and developing collaborative platforms that allow project participants to share building information. Such initiatives help establish BIM application policies for relevant management authorities.
