According to the National BIM Standards Board (NBIMS) in the U.S., BIM is defined as the digital representation of the physical and functional characteristics of a facility or building project. It serves as a shared knowledge resource for decision-making throughout the entire lifecycle of a facility, from construction to demolition.
BIM is a semantic, continuous, and digital building model that effectively represents the entire lifecycle of a physical building. It encompasses spatial relationships, geometry, geographic information systems, as well as the properties and quantities of various building components. By integrating data, processes, and resources across different stages of the construction project, BIM provides a comprehensive description of the engineering object.
The process of BIM 3D modeling essentially reconstructs the original 2D building information. The standardization of BIM modeling greatly influences the quality of the final model and the effectiveness of BIM applications in later phases. Typical BIM modeling standards cover the following areas:
① Model units and coordinates: Ensuring consistent measurement units and coordinate systems within the BIM model.

⑤ Folder structure: This includes the organization of BIM model folders, project folders, and family folders to ensure systematic data management.
⑥ File naming conventions: Standardized naming improves information clarity and management efficiency.
