BIM models possess multidimensional characteristics, and selecting appropriate BIM software during the construction phase depends largely on the complexity of the project. Currently, nine leading BIM software providers dominate both domestic and international markets: Autodesk, Bentley, Graphisoft/Nemechek AG, Gery Technology, Luban BIM system software, Guanglian Software, MiagiCAD, Tekla, and CATIA. Each has developed a range of specialized software solutions.
Among these, Autodesk holds the largest share of the global construction market and is recognized as a leader in the BIM industry. For instance, Autodesk’s Revit and Navisworks Manager are widely used. Revit is utilized to create building, structural, and electromechanical models, while Navisworks Manager helps detect clashes between pipelines and structural components.
Revit operates as an independent software platform, utilizing distinct code libraries and file structures different from AutoCAD. Its key features include:
① An extensible language editing mode for green buildings (GreenBuildingXML or gbXML), providing a platform for energy consumption simulation and structural load analysis;
② Compatibility with structural analysis software such as ROBOT and RISA;
③ The ability to export models or drawings in DXF and DWG file formats from other design or modeling software for BIM integration.

Advantages of Autodesk Revit:
① Internationally recognized brand with comprehensive professional software and an intuitive user interface;
② Powerful functionality combined with user-friendly operation, excellent rendering effects, and support for third-party plugins such as Family Library Master, Olive Mountain Family Library, DaimaoStudio, and Extensions—facilitating ease of use for project engineers;
③ Various views are closely linked to 3D models, enhancing data sharing and information exchange. The model updates in real time based on input from different professionals, improving accuracy and minimizing redundant drawings. Additionally, 3D walkthroughs enable better coordination among project stakeholders. Revit has been successfully applied in many large-scale engineering projects in China.
Limitations:
① High computer performance requirements—laptops often lack sufficient power for large-scale modeling, making desktop computers necessary;
② Slower modeling speed, suitable primarily for complex parts and specific nodes; overall structural modeling performance is average and not ideal for business control;
③ Due to the complexity of engineering structures, operating Revit demands significant expertise. Moreover, its secondary development capabilities are still maturing.
MiagiCAD
MiagiCAD is a globally recognized BIM technology company known for:
① Strong mechanical and electrical installation capabilities, with widely used comprehensive pipeline functions. It supports various calculations such as thermal balance and heat loss and features collision detection;
② Compliance with the latest IFC standards, allowing calculation models to export IFC files.
Disadvantages:
① Business control functions are not yet fully developed and remain limited, with strength primarily in mechanical and electrical features;
② High demand for engineering applications exists, but the user interface requires improvement. Secondary development according to specific requirements is currently unavailable.
The Luban BIM system software is a comprehensive platform designed for multiple disciplines during the construction phase, including civil engineering, steel reinforcement, and mechanical and electrical engineering. BIM adoption began early in China’s construction stage, driven by project needs, enterprise management realities, and construction personnel habits.

Advantages of Luban BIM system software:
① Comprehensive BIM-based professional software suite covering civil engineering, steel reinforcement, installation, cost estimation, etc., with strong functionality. It offers a full solution for basic data management based on BIM technology, creating a BIM database with open data sharing and exchange capabilities with other BIM software;
② Luban has a high-end BIM consulting company and implementation team, providing clear localization advantages and enabling secondary development tailored to project requirements.
Disadvantage: Steel structure projects require integration with Xsteel software.
Guanglian Da Company
Guanglian Da is a publicly listed domestic company whose software development also incorporates BIM technology. It holds a significant position in the traditional cost estimation market.
Advantages: Expertise across multiple areas including civil engineering, steel reinforcement, installation, cost estimation, and fine decoration;
Disadvantages: BIM technology adoption began relatively recently, with limited practical engineering applications. Its BIM management platforms at both project and enterprise levels are not yet fully mature.
