Runner Service Station Constructed with Stainless Steel Arcade Frame
This runner service station serves as a public facility within Beijing Olympic Forest Park (referred to as “Aosen Park”). Like many sports parks across China, Aosen Park was developed as a supporting infrastructure for the 2008 Olympic Games, aiming to enhance public services. Commissioned by Aosen Park, TEMP Studio designed this runner service station featuring a stainless steel arcade frame structure. Located in what is known as Beijing’s “holy land of running,” the station creates a public space that harmoniously blends functionality with aesthetics, offering multiple amenities including social areas, resting spots, showers, storage lockers, and vending services.

Comprehensive Customized Services for Runners
Situated on an open site within the park, the main building of the service station extends into two wing structures, forming a square space at one corner. Inside, there are separate shower rooms for men and women.

During on-site research, the TEMP team noticed that runners often used nearby natural elements—like rocks or tree branches—for stretching due to the absence of dedicated stretching facilities, which could pose safety risks. To address this, the architect designed a series of stretching railings with curved, undulating forms and varying heights to accommodate users of all body types. The white curved railings also visually complement the surrounding trees, harmonizing with their freely extending branches and white-painted trunks.

An Arcade That Combines Openness and Privacy
Arches serve multiple architectural roles, softening the rigid lines of linear structures and adding aesthetic balance.

The arcade of the Runner Service Station is open at both ends and connects seamlessly with the adjacent square, allowing users to enter and exit freely from any direction. Storage lockers are situated within several of the arches. The arcade’s combination of gentle and steep curves creates a visually striking, highly symmetrical architectural composition.

The shower rooms are situated within a series of uniformly shaped, interconnected arches. These spaces make full use of frosted glass to ensure user privacy while maximizing natural light.

As visitors walk through the passages inside the station, the rear partition arcade frame reinforces the building’s role as a public facility—providing functional amenities that blend aesthetic appeal with thoughtful design to better serve the local community.
