BIM Q&A: Understanding the Workflow of Data-Driven Modeling with BIM

BIM-based data-driven modeling technology refers to the automatic creation of 3D models using various types of data, such as parameters, formulas, charts, or equations, through API interfaces provided by BIM software platforms.

BIM Q&A | How does BIM model? Workflow of data-driven modeling technology based on BIM

The fundamental workflow of BIM-based data-driven modeling technology includes the following steps:

(1) Establish a relevant database containing diverse data types such as parameters, formulas, charts, or equations. This data covers:

  • Basic geometric parameters of component elements;
  • Engineering performance parameters like material, density, quality, and temperature;
  • Relationships and positional information between engineering objects, along with other relevant data.

(2) Perform secondary development on the BIM software by using its provided APIs. This allows reading data and creating or modifying models by leveraging the software’s built-in dynamic link libraries.

(3) The resulting BIM model elements are driven by data. These models appear as components constrained by parameterized data. Any update or modification in the database immediately reflects in the corresponding model elements and all associated views dynamically, eliminating the need to update each view manually. This process significantly enhances design efficiency.

Compared to traditional manual modeling, BIM-based data-driven modeling technology offers several advantages, especially in the prefabricated building sector:

(1) Creating component models for prefabricated libraries often involves repetitive tasks. Using data-driven modeling reduces manual workload and improves the quality of design models;

(2) Prefabricated components require continuous evaluation and optimization during design, necessitating frequent modifications. With data-driven technology, updating a single key database parameter dynamically modifies the model, greatly simplifying the otherwise tedious process of manually updating the component library;

(3) Data-driven BIM models can link component data directly to automated production equipment like CNC machines, maximizing the benefits of industrialized building processes.
