BIM technology, recognized for its powerful capabilities and efficiency, is widely considered a second revolution in engineering design and construction—following CAD as the first. By continuously collecting data, BIM creates a comprehensive and consistent building information database with logical data integration. Compared to traditional CAD models, BIM models convey project information with attributes of completeness, interdependence, and consistency, as detailed below:
(1) BIM Information Completeness
Information completeness in BIM refers to the breadth and quantity of data categories included. BIM emphasizes various types of design information, such as component names, breakdowns, materials, geometric dimensions, and procurement details. It also incorporates project site management data—like site photos, documentation, construction plans, actual progress, and cost data including human resources, materials, and equipment consumption—as well as project operation and maintenance information, covering spatial layout, equipment upkeep, and energy consumption.
The accuracy of this information depends on the model’s level of detail, ranging from conceptual design stages to comprehensive datasets required for project completion.
(2) BIM Information Interdependence
Components within a BIM model are identified and correlated, enabling statistical analysis via modeling software to produce related drawings and documentation. When modifications occur in the model, drawings, or documents, all linked information automatically updates in unison. This “modify once, update everywhere” approach helps prevent errors and omissions throughout the project lifecycle.
(3) BIM Information Consistency
BIM ensures consistent information across various project stages and lifecycle phases, even as the level of detail evolves. Data seamlessly transfers from one stage to the next without loss. As model objects are refined and developed, all associated historical information synchronizes automatically, maintaining consistency that traditional methods cannot achieve.
In summary, BIM represents an innovative concept and practice that leverages advanced information technology and new construction business models to reduce waste and improve efficiency across the industry. This transformative approach lies at the heart of BIM technology.
