Understanding Revit Files: Types and Classifications for BIM Professionals

(1) Project File: In Revit, all information related to an entire project is stored in a file with the .rvt extension. This project file contains not only geometric data such as spaces and dimensions but also engineering details including the project name, status, client name, project address, geographical location, and drawing approval date. A complete project file consists of a 3D model, 2D drawings, plans and sections, node views, renderings, schedules, and other relevant project information.

(2) Family Files: Families are the fundamental building blocks in Revit. Every graphic element used in a Revit project is created based on families. Items such as doors, windows, columns, furniture, and keynotes are loaded into families and saved as files with the .rfa extension, known as family files. Each family has its own separate file. In the Chinese version of Autodesk Revit, there are 11 major categories containing over 4,000 family files. Users can also create custom family files tailored to their specific needs.

(3) Family Template Files: Besides using the official family files, users can create custom families to meet their requirements. Custom families are created based on family templates, which are saved as files with the .rft extension. Each family template adheres to strict rules that define the behavior of the family. Different templates are not interchangeable, so selecting the appropriate family template is essential when creating a new family.

(4) Project Template Files: Revit provides project templates tailored to various disciplines such as construction, architecture, structural engineering, mechanical, electrical, and piping systems. These templates are saved as files with the .rte extension. A project template initializes parameters for new projects including floor settings, line shapes, line widths, view visibility, and preloaded families. Similar to family templates, users create new projects based on these templates to avoid starting from scratch. While it is possible to start from an empty project template, it can be tedious during modeling. Companies can also develop their own project templates to match their standards and requirements.
