Located in Fuqing City, Fujian Province, this project involves relocating the former Fuqing Second Hospital. The design encompasses several key facilities, including outpatient and emergency buildings, medical technology centers, inpatient wards, public health centers, research and teaching buildings, fever outpatient units, basements, Longtian Town Health Center, and outdoor supporting structures. The total construction area spans 170,840 square meters, accommodating 800 beds, with construction planned in three phases.

The Fuqing Second Hospital is designed to become a high-standard, modern tertiary hospital that integrates medical treatment, prevention, healthcare, rehabilitation, and education. It aims to elevate medical service quality and extend its influence across the Longgao Peninsula.
The design addresses various challenges and pain points of the site by deeply interpreting architectural space while fully accommodating medical workflows. The layout centers around a north-south medical street, which serves as the main axis of development. Outpatient clinics, medical technology facilities, and wards are arranged on either side of this street. From south to north, the three construction phases are clearly defined, ensuring logical regional division.

In terms of building volume, inspiration was drawn from Fujian’s traditional “earth buildings,” featuring a circular courtyard as the central design element to create a vibrant and welcoming atrium space. This design also enhances ventilation through the wind-pulling effect. The courtyard’s dimensions were carefully calculated to allow two nursing units per floor, optimizing functional usability.
The architectural form emphasizes “lightness,” achieved through the use of aluminum panels, glass, and wood materials. The ward building’s exterior features vertical green balconies, with the overall massing articulated by aluminum plate grilles surrounding the greenery. The outpatient wing’s offset design forms semi-outdoor corridor spaces. A dynamic, wind-responsive curtain wall covers the exterior, adapting to environmental changes and providing the first layer of protection against typhoon impacts.

The architectural space centers around an open-air medical street that connects various medical functions and service flows, following local practices. Corridors extend from this street to the adjacent buildings, linking outpatient clinics, medical technology centers, and wards, creating a rich spatial experience.
Currently, only the south-side road surrounding the site is built, with limited access due to land acquisition constraints and traffic organization challenges. To address this, a dual-main-entrance strategy is proposed: the first phase entrance is on the south side, while the main entrance will shift to a central eastern location after the second phase and the east-side road are completed. The entrance area features a tree-shaped canopy, symbolizing the camphor tree of Fuqing City.
The medical street’s roof is made from two types of opaque glass, abstractly inspired by Fuqing’s osmanthus flower, highlighting regional characteristics. The building’s outpatient level incorporates tree-shaped supports and wooden materials, creating a warm, soothing environment that eases patients’ emotions.
