The Qinchang Village Party Building Complex is situated on the east side of the Qinchang Village Party and Mass Activity Center in Chengguan Town, Xiuwu County, Jiaozuo City, Henan Province. This project represents the second phase of the Qinchang Village Party and Mass Activity Center complex.
Unlike the west side, which focuses on non-profit community services, the East Campus introduces local agricultural and cultural creative product exhibitions and sales, dining options, coffee shops, and small community businesses. It also includes cultural and recreational facilities such as libraries, galleries, and sports amenities.
The goal is to use the space as both a platform and a catalyst to create potential employment and entrepreneurial opportunities for villagers. This approach aims to explore a sustainable model where rural public building construction drives economic and cultural revitalization, injecting new life into the community.

The eastern architectural complex maintains the courtyard-centered spatial layout strategy established by the western side. However, while the west courtyard emphasizes overall unity, formality, and symmetry, the east courtyard adopts a more casual, everyday atmosphere.
The building mass is divided into three smaller structures, one or two stories tall, arranged asymmetrically around three sides of the site to reinforce the street frontage. The three courtyards created by these natural enclosures interact with the western corridor courtyard, maintaining the site’s open and accessible character.
Multiple human-scale courtyard entrances between the small buildings provide convenient access for villagers to stay, pass through, or gather. These multifunctional outdoor spaces offer social and activity areas for residents of all ages, complementing and enriching the more formal ceremonial courtyard on the west side.

The largest single-story building is positioned in the southeast corner adjacent to the village’s main street. This space functions as a public village canteen on regular days and can accommodate large events such as weddings and birthday celebrations.
A two-story building on the east side houses a book bar, coffee shop, and exhibition gallery. It features dual entrances facing both the street and the courtyard, allowing children to borrow books via an intelligent system during their free time, while tourists can relax at the coffee shop.
On the north side, a single-story building serves as commercial space showcasing local agricultural and cultural products. It caters to the surrounding villages, towns, and streets to the north and east. Facing the courtyard on its south side is a semi-outdoor arcade with benches, which doubles as seating for the basketball court audience and a natural stage backdrop for large outdoor events.

During our research on martial arts, we observed that all public basketball courts in the county attract villagers, especially teenagers, regardless of their condition. Except during severe weather, the village basketball court is always lively.
Therefore, from the initial design stage, we recommended preserving the basketball court function in the courtyard. Upon project completion, the basketball court, featuring vibrant graphics designed by a graphic artist, became extremely popular with teenagers.
Benches along the north side and two-story public platforms on the west and east sides naturally form spectator areas, providing excellent viewing angles. The outdoor basketball court has also become the village’s primary public event space, hosting weddings, birthday parties, and communal outdoor meals.

The buildings feature cast-in-place concrete structures. In harmony with the Party and Mass Activity Center on the west side, the Qinchang Party Building Complex incorporates the traditional local “arch” motif found in semi-underground dwellings.
Using this geometric form as a prototype, the design undergoes modular abstraction and evolution to adapt to various building functions and spaces.
