This renovation project transforms an original residential building into the studio for South Korea’s leading fashion brand, Thisisneverthat. Approximately 40% of the original walls were removed and restructured to accommodate the studio’s new functional requirements.

The original building was wrapped in multiple layers of exterior walls, each crafted from distinct materials, resembling the layers of human skin. Peeling back each layer reveals subtle changes in indoor lighting and brightness, creating a dynamic gradient effect shaped by the interplay of light and architecture.

A gap exists between the building’s outer wall and its original internal structure, introducing a strong sense of verticality. This space allows natural elements such as light, air, and rain to penetrate, adding an extra dimension to the architectural experience.

From the exterior, the semi-transparent outer curtain wall offers subtle glimpses into the building’s inner structure, emphasizing the verticality that defines the interior space.

Each exterior wall layer uses different materials, reflecting unique textures and character. The outermost curtain wall expresses simplicity and monotony, while the inner layers preserve depth, evoking a sense of rawness and incompleteness.
