Dongshan Island, part of Dongshan County in Zhangzhou City, Fujian Province, is the second largest island in Fujian and the seventh largest in China. This island, shaped by the sea, boasts a rich history, unique culture, and distinctive scenic resources. The project is situated in Jinluan Bay on Dongshan Island, adjacent to a pristine beach, and is known as the Seaside Life Experience Hall.

The design harmonizes with the terrain by using triangular motifs as the foundational form. Through variations in light, it shapes spatial experiences that evoke a sense of time and era. This approach reflects the concept of “shaping space with light and shadow, and conveying time through space.”

The overall layout prioritizes respect for the site, adapting seamlessly to the terrain to craft an artistic atmosphere. It fully leverages the strengths of the plot while skillfully avoiding its limitations. The planning focuses on the organic relationship between nature and boundary constraints, inviting natural elements in to foster a strong sense of place.

Accompanying the Seaside Life Experience Hall, a series of spatial sequences unfold progressively. Each architectural space is positioned to offer distinct landscape views, making a stroll through the area an engaging journey of discovery.

In summary, the design elaborates deep concepts across four dimensions of spatial relationships: external place, internal place, the interweaving of form, and the seamless sense of interior and exterior.

External Place: This creates a narrative and immersive atmosphere, crafting a space where visitors feel welcome to stay and engage.
Internal Space: The architectural form aligns with the surrounding landscape, integrating into the broader environment to evoke both inclusiveness and precision.

Interweaving Forms: The design balances solid and void, creating architectural forms that are simultaneously strong and elegant—thick and stable yet agile and refined.
Seamless Indoor-Outdoor Connection: By permeating boundaries with transparent materials, the architecture, interiors, and landscape merge, enriching sensory experiences throughout the space.

Visitors first pause at the semi-open water feature near the entrance before entering the sand table area inside. The design uses natural light to create dynamic spatial effects. A transition zone, separated from the outdoor courtyard by a large glass wall, connects the sand table area to the negotiation space, fostering a flowing atmosphere that blurs indoor and outdoor boundaries.

Climbing the art staircase leads to a mezzanine communication space, offering visual interaction with the sand table area below and the outdoor courtyard above. The façade’s perforated aluminum panels feature a carefully balanced pattern of openings, casting dappled tree-like shadows during the day and sparkling stars at night.
