Located just an hour’s drive west of Vienna, on a gently southward-sloping vineyard hillside, the Steven Holl Architects team completed a 30-room expansion of the Rossum Hotel in Langenlois. Collaborating once again with local architect Sam Ott Reinisch, the new building extends the design language of the original Rossum Hotel and Wine Center, completed in 2005.

The design concept for the expansion is “above ground,” seamlessly connected to the original structure through a prefabricated arch space. The entrance features a reflective pool that mirrors the geometric form of the building’s facade.

“Architecture is undoubtedly a collaborative art. When the team is composed of close friends and passionate clients, the process becomes especially rewarding. They deeply appreciate the spirit architecture conveys, along with a shared love for details, light, and space.”

The roof and walls of the new extension are clad with Rheinzink, a naturally frosted material that has weathered gracefully, blending harmoniously with the surrounding landscape and sky. From the glass curtain walls of the hotel rooms, guests enjoy sweeping views of distant mountains, vineyards, the original Rossum Hotel, and the Wine Center. The exposed wooden concrete walls complement the custom-made natural wood furnishings, creating a warm and inviting atmosphere.
