As Harbin Vanke’s first future-themed project, the Vanke Intelligent Future City is recognized as the city’s premier 5G smart community. Designed by AG Huichuang, the architecture, interiors, and commercial streets embody innovation. The project introduces “three major intelligent systems, nearly 10 key technological systems, and countless human-centric details,” inspiring Harbin residents’ imagination of future living.
Additionally, the launch of “Caizhu,” a billion-dollar third-party B2B building materials procurement and trading platform jointly developed by Vanke, Zhongcheng Investment, Zhongtian Group, and others, has fostered a high-tech industry cluster within the urban area. This initiative not only energizes the transformation of urban industries but also officially commenced operation in June 2021, marking a new chapter for Harbin’s future.

From project inception through partial completion, the AG Huichuang design team sought to address key questions regarding the architecture and interior of Vanke Smart Future City:
- How can a new intelligent future community with multifunctional capabilities be created to resonate with contemporary needs?
- How can complex, diverse, flexible thematic environments and unique exhibition spaces be designed?
- In what ways can the Sci-Tech Innovation Street enhance both experiential and urban functions?
- How can a multi-connected urban identity foster emotional bonds with the community?
Caizhu Northeast Headquarters Exhibition Hall
Serving as the technology and culture exhibition center for Vanke Smart Future City, the Caizhu Northeast Headquarters Exhibition Hall spans over 6,000 square meters. Located at the heart of the community, adjacent to the low-density technology innovation commercial district and premium residential areas, it aims to showcase Harbin’s forthcoming smart urban lifestyle.
Initially, the hall operates as a public multifunctional space featuring a building materials trading big data center, an intelligent building product experience center, conference facilities, a sales center, and coworking spaces. Future plans include transforming it into a municipal exhibition hall open to the public, hosting commercial activities and exhibitions.

The design of Vanke’s Northeast Headquarters exhibition hall draws inspiration from Harbin Smart Future City’s defining motifs of “crystal” and “light.” Guided by the concept “crystal of science and technology, light of inspiration,” the project integrates the city’s unique natural and cultural traits into a unified design that spans buildings, spaces, and urban blocks. This approach conveys a fresh image of Harbin through avant-garde architectural techniques and energy-efficient building technologies.

The exhibition hall’s “Energy Box” features three breathing crystalline facades made of perforated folded aluminum panels. These symbolize the light of technology, nature, and humanity. Utilizing photonic crystal concepts—”crystallization, fission, and modularization”—the design reflects the core energies of “industrial strength,” “resource aggregation,” and “technological empowerment accelerating nuclear power.” Enhancing the “energy box” creates multiple visitor entrances, fostering a dynamic gathering and interactive environment.

The building’s exterior walls, designed as photonic crystals, use an array of multi-faceted aluminum modular panels. This design provides effective double-layer insulation, shading in summer, and minimizing heat loss during Harbin’s cold winters. The porous facade system also promotes natural ventilation. Passive design strategies—including heat recovery ventilation, solar thermal systems, and ground source heat pumps—reduce energy consumption and enhance visitor comfort amid extreme climate conditions.

The spatial design inside the Caizhu Exhibition Hall mirrors the building’s architectural themes, focusing on technological connectivity and natural sunlight. Suspended perforated metal panels, inspired by the tactile sensation of fine yarn and the visual effect of weightlessness, surround the atrium. This installation emphasizes the importance of information flow in the digital age, infusing the space with vitality and forward-thinking energy.

The atrium of light serves as a dynamic public hub, connecting the building’s spaces through three “energy boxes.” These are linked by grand staircases and a spiral flow loop spanning the first and second floors, creating a seamless spatial experience. The transparent skylight design enhances the sense of openness and warmth, while minimalist lines, diverse materials, and shifting natural light combine to create a rich, layered, and harmonious interior aesthetic.

The public passage leading to the Future Home exhibition hall functions as a transition between dynamic and static zones, as well as a digital display area illustrating the building’s development. Emphasizing the “smart future” theme, the designer created a “time tunnel” using semi-transparent polycarbonate panels as walls. Advanced digital lighting showcases collected data, offering visitors an immersive digital journey through time and heightening engagement.

Beyond the completed exhibition hall, the ongoing development of the “Science and Technology Innovation Street” within Vanke Smart Future City promises exciting prospects.
Science and Technology Innovation Business Street
The Science and Technology Innovation Business Street comprises eight office buildings housing leading park enterprises, alongside three “energy box” exhibition halls. The design focuses on blending technology and culture into a vibrant commercial environment. The eight enterprise buildings embody the concepts of “City Window” and “Digital Waterfall,” featuring metallic facades and dynamic cores. Together with the exhibition halls, they form a cohesive science and technology innovation community, fostering intelligent urban scenes and collaborative industry development.

Looking forward, smart and convenient urban life will guide future development. The unveiling and operation of the Caizhu Exhibition Hall highlight its green, flexible, open, and adaptive architectural style, representing a new model for future growth. Vanke Smart Future City aims to be a leading example of industry-city integration, evolving alongside the city and seamlessly connecting with cutting-edge technology.
