The base of the building is situated on a narrow slope surrounded by ancient trees. It faces north and south, nestled between two early 20th-century villas.

Given the abundance of ancient trees in the area and the importance of preserving views of Lake Amer and Anders Abbey, the building’s form rises from the ground like a tower, echoing the neighboring structures. To enhance this vertical impression, it features three floors, with the living room located on the top floor. From the large window, one can enjoy panoramic views of Lake Amer, Anders Abbey, and the Alps beyond the treetops. The kitchen, serving as the heart of daily family life, opens directly to the garden on the first floor.

Using natural, unprocessed materials was a key focus during the design process. Architectural details incorporate brass, raw oak, and plaster surfaces. Lighting fixtures and furniture were custom designed to complement the building’s rustic style.

Respecting the plaster finishes of the two adjacent historic buildings was essential when designing the exterior facade. The same plaster technique was applied here. A custom model was created and submitted to the local preservation bureau for approval. Traditional methods were used, with a church plasterer applying the plaster by hand using a mud shovel.

In line with the original vision for a simple, ecological, and sustainable home, this building uses a traditional brick structure without insulation. It is designed as a “passive house,” avoiding the use of unnecessary technical systems such as mechanical ventilation. The deep window recesses eliminate the need for additional sunshades. Due to site constraints, the floor plan follows a compact hexagonal shape.

The project was a collaborative effort between the owner Andreas Schwab, his wife, and architect Felix Huber. Andreas Schwab is a product designer who is self-taught in architecture.
