Taki Nakamura & NAP have designed a Japanese residential complex called the “Holy Stone House.” This home is centered around a private garden courtyard and is located in a quiet neighborhood in northern Kyoto, near the iconic Yamaguchi Shrine and Mt. Hiei. Inspired by the local tradition of observing weather and seasonal changes through natural landscapes, the architect aimed to create a residence that offers views of distant mountains while maintaining a close connection to nature.

Surrounded by neighboring houses, the design features vertical wooden barriers on the street-facing facade to ensure privacy. At the heart of the home lies an outdoor courtyard that serves as the focal point, bringing natural light and greenery into every room. Soil excavated during the foundation work was used to create a mound within the courtyard, which intentionally blocks the line of sight between the restaurant and the bedroom behind it. Connecting these two spaces is a book-lined corridor with desks facing the garden, fostering a serene atmosphere.

At the center of the garden stands a sacred stone dedicated to the gods. Although physically tangible, this stone holds a transcendent presence as a spiritual centerpiece. According to the architect, this duality enriches the small house and garden with endless depth and meaning. The garden itself is designed to resemble Mount Bi Rui, featuring low-growing plants such as moss, bellflowers, and bamboo that add layers of visual texture and depth.

The architect’s vision was to create an outdoor space conducive to meditation and spiritual awakening. By increasing the density of the garden at eye level when seated, the design encourages a natural lowering of the eyelids and a soft, semi-closed gaze—reflecting a meditative state focused both inward and outward. Traditionally, gardens are places of prayer, and here, the garden is dedicated to fostering a tranquil environment where one can achieve enlightenment and nirvana through immersive, contemplative experiences.
