Indonesian weaving artist Agnes Hansella has created a remarkable wall-mounted trio in Bali titled “Mountain,” “Sea,” and “Sunset.” Unlike traditional weaving or knitting, this artwork is crafted entirely from knots. The pieces take the form of tassels, extending over 37 feet, resembling a tassel cloak draped over an outdoor structure—breathing new life into the tranquil Jimbaran Beach.

Agnes Hansella is a self-taught artist who has dedicated herself to mastering tassel lace-making techniques, discovering a deep passion for fiber fabrics and traditional handicrafts. For the “Mountain,” “Sea,” and “Sunset” pieces, she employed 16-millimeter Manila hemp ropes tied into intricate knots that evoke imagery of waves, corals, and flocks of birds.
As seen in the photo, completing this monumental work required workers to cut the hemp rope with steel saws, carefully balancing and assembling it on scaffolding.

“I’m not skilled at drawing design plans, so most of the intricate patterns come from my intuition and the conditions on site,” explains Hansella. “With tassel-making techniques, the hemp rope has its own character and will. As an artist, I respect this and understand what is possible and what is not.”
