The “Kawakami Residence,” originally built between 1845 and 1848, is nestled in the mountains along the Nakatsu River in Japan. Once home to a prominent local family, it has recently been fully restored and transformed into a short-term vacation rental. These two videos, filmed by Kuroyanagi, beautifully showcase the residence and its surroundings as they change with the seasons.

The restoration was led by Keitaro Muto Architectural Firm between 2019 and 2020. A dedicated team of experts worked to preserve the traditional wooden elements and structures, utilizing natural materials such as wood, mud, and paper. The design carefully maintains the original layout from 175 years ago. Guests staying at the residence can enjoy spacious interiors with stunning views of the surrounding terraced fields and the Kiso Mountains.
