This “Sand House,” designed by Studio MK27, offers stunning views of the Atlantic Ocean while remaining discreetly nestled within its site on Brazil’s northeast coast. Located in Bahia state and surrounded by tropical forest (Photo: Fernando Guerra), the residence is built on a wooden deck that supports five separate enclosed volumes. The entire deck is shaded by a permeable eucalyptus trellis, which rests on 14 laminated wooden frames. Several trees grow through both the deck and overhead canopy, providing continuous natural shade for the inhabitants.

Inside, Studio MK27 streamlined the design, retaining only the essential living spaces. Each of the five volumes serves an independent function: kitchen, dining room, living room, master bedroom, and guest room. The deck itself acts as a flowing space connecting these volumes, while their arrangement creates a variety of both public and more private areas. By blurring the line between interior and exterior, the architecture harmonizes with nature and becomes an integral part of the surrounding landscape.

The swimming pool is located separately from the main structure, positioned closer to the coastline. Its design favors natural, organic shapes over straight lines and sharp angles, creating a subtle dialogue with the house’s architectural forms.
