Cosmos Architecture has unveiled plans for a multifunctional cultural complex in Banja Luka, Bosnia. This proposal, part of an international competition, features a variety of performance venues including theater and ballet spaces, as well as art exhibition areas and restaurants.
Named Common Lights, the building is designed to be a versatile, interactive, and welcoming space. It creates a public square beneath the structure, fostering a dynamic connection between the city’s cultural events and the complex itself.

According to Cosmos Architecture, the design serves not only as a landmark but also as a symbolic ‘lighthouse’. The complex aims to become a platform for cultural dialogue and a meeting point for enthusiasts from various professions and interests. The design team describes it as a place that invites artists, tourists, and residents alike to experience architecture, culture, knowledge, music, and nature.

The building’s design emphasizes flexibility. Interior spaces can host temporary exhibitions or be reconfigured entirely, ensuring the complex remains adaptable to future needs. The surrounding green spaces will be preserved, with an underground parking area located beneath the site. Above ground, the park slopes gradually under the building and transitions into an indoor art museum.

The complex is organized vertically with different functions on each floor: administrative offices are on the second floor, a restaurant occupies the third, two music halls of varying sizes are on the fourth and fifth floors, another restaurant is located on the sixth floor, and two theater halls occupy the seventh and eighth floors respectively. The top floor is dedicated to temporary exhibitions.

“Events will not be confined to closed, hidden spaces but will take place in transparent, open areas that encourage social interaction within a cultural setting,” the architects explained. Within this floating volume, staircases and intersecting pathways will activate continuous events and unpredictable social encounters. This innovative architectural form embraces complexity, transforming it into an inclusive environment that supports and revitalizes the growing urban community.
