Recently, the architectural firm Carl Viggo Hølmebakk, in collaboration with the Norwegian Public Roads Authority (NPRA), unveiled a stunning new staircase bridge spanning the Wollinsfossen Falls in Norway. This project introduces a scenic route to Hardangervidda, Northern Europe’s largest national park, continuing the tradition of exploring the intersection of architecture, technology, infrastructure, and nature.
Many factors influence bridge design. While safety and stability are paramount, this bridge also honors the natural language of the surrounding wilderness paths and landscapes. The design prioritizes panoramic views and an immersive experience of the environment. As Hølmebakk explains, “This stepped bridge creates a new way of viewing and perceiving landscape spaces.”

The Wallingsfosen Staircase Bridge, designed by Carl Viggo Hølmebakk Architects together with the NPRA, stretches 47 meters (over 150 feet) and features 99 steps. The bridge’s elevation difference between its ends is 16 meters (more than 50 feet). Although the bridge was assembled onsite by lifting its seven components with cranes, it is entirely steel-made and securely anchored into the rock via robust rock bolt holes. Project manager Kjersti Wold described the newly opened staircase bridge in Hardanger National Park as groundbreaking.

This project aims to boost the growing tourism industry within Wollinsfossen National Park. The staircase bridge, along with its connected paths and attractions, represents the second phase of the NPRA’s scenic route development in Wallingsfosen. The first phase, completed in 2018, included improvements to the landscape, pathways, safety barriers, parking facilities, and service buildings near the Nizari Hotel. The third phase, scheduled for launch in 2021, will add more attractions, pathways, and restroom facilities. Upon completion, the entire pedestrian trail starting from Måbødalen canyon will be secure and fully accessible.
