Located in Polomi Village, Dong Commune, Songtai District on the western outskirts of Hanoi, Vietnam, Mr. Hong’s residence is set on a gently sloping terrain that overlooks a lake. The site offers expansive views, with residential buildings naturally integrated among trees, allowing all spaces to be filled with plants, fresh air, and sunlight. The building platform follows the natural terrain to prevent termite invasion and moisture problems, while ensuring effective ground drainage. The design emphasizes preserving the original local vegetation and landscape as much as possible.

The house is designed with a horizontal layout to maximize views of the lake on one side. The public areas and kitchen are centrally located, adjacent to the studio, guest rooms, and maid’s quarters. The master bedroom and sauna are situated on the second floor. A uniquely shaped balcony frames the scenic view, enhancing the connection to the natural surroundings.

The adobe bricks used in construction are made from soil sourced directly from the homeowner’s land. The spacious thatched roof provides both shade and sound insulation, effectively controlling solar radiation to maintain comfortable indoor temperatures.

A standout feature of the design is the staircase, which evokes the image of a bundle of straw, reflecting the homeowner’s personal memories. The skylight above the staircase is covered with glass, casting a crescent-shaped reflection that adds a unique visual element. Overall, the residence creates a comfortable and welcoming atmosphere that blends familiarity with a subtle sense of novelty, presenting a thoughtful solution for modern rural residential architecture.
