Located at Monument to the People’s Liberation, Loquat Mountain Printing Factory No. 1, Yuzhong District, Chongqing, the hotel consists of two main buildings that follow the natural terrain—one positioned in front of the other, staggered along the slope. They face the majestic Yangtze River, offering views of the oasis nestled between two bridges and the city skyline beyond.

Concept and Inspiration: The Wedding Dress Skirt
Set amidst historic industrial buildings with open river views, the site naturally attracts tourists seeking unique photo opportunities and experiences. This inspired the designers to combine film and television cultural elements with existing wedding photography themes, creating an artistic space centered around “love” that resonates with the Mont Mirage Hotel’s brand identity.

The flowing hem of a bride’s wedding dress is a timeless and beautiful image. Imagining the old building as a bride awaiting her wedding, the designer’s challenge was to craft a delicate, soft “wedding dress” that connects the two aged structures while giving new life and character to the former factory space.

The “skirt skirt” structure, featuring a thin shell and metal curtain wall, forms an inviting open space that integrates hotel reception, relaxation areas, and multifunctional halls. It floats like a canopy, cascades like a curtain, rises as a lobby, and descends as a staircase. Visitors can wander along the “skirt skirt,” creating a versatile pathway that embodies the spatial experience of this mountainous city.

Dialogue Between Old and New
The renovation balances bold, creative interventions with a respectful preservation of historical elements, allowing old and new to coexist harmoniously. The new additions act as a bright, clean canvas, contrasting with the coarse textures of old walls and exposed concrete beams and columns. The design invites guests to experience modern aesthetics while reflecting upon the industrial heritage of the original factory building.

The factory’s green brick facade holds significant historical and aesthetic value. Alongside protective restoration, it remains a prominent feature of the building’s exterior. The designer views this not only as a tribute to the passage of time but also as a way to breathe new life into the structure, allowing visitors to sense the changing seasons.

The northern backyard offers a naturally poetic space. Ivy climbs the old walls, and every brick and tile carries memories of the past. The dappled light filtering through dense foliage creates a rich interplay of shadow and illumination—a gift of nature and time. The designer aims to preserve and continue this unique story.

Celebrating Light and Shadow
Light is an essential design element, both natural and artificial. Skillful use of light and shadow not only serves practical purposes but also enhances the emotional and spiritual atmosphere. For example, skylights in the courtyard and auditorium not only brighten the spaces but also create abstract patterns of light and shadow, guiding the spirit toward the stars.

A Poetic Retreat
The designer envisions the hotel as a miniature landscape city, infused with the art of living. Guests can leisurely stroll between the lobby and the water courtyard, immerse themselves in the art hall, and enjoy the unique interplay of light and shadow. At night, the rooftop infinity pool offers a perfect spot to swim while taking in breathtaking views of the city lights.

Returning to the guestrooms, visitors can enjoy uninterrupted views of the Yangtze River without drawing the curtains. The Mountain Ghost Hotel, transformed from an old factory, blends the industrial heritage with the mountain city’s landscape. This innovative renovation offers a unique resort experience and serves as a meaningful reference for urban renewal and historic building restoration.
