This project is situated on a typical residential site in Singapore, developed in the 1980s. The Stark Residences occupy a unique area characterized by diverse activity zones. Within a 1.5-kilometer radius, the site is surrounded by various property types, including low-rise and high-rise buildings such as the Changi Prison Complex, Changi Airport, as well as multiple industrial and commercial districts.
Given the eclectic mix of architectural styles nearby, we questioned what this environment truly signifies. Architecture often involves integrating complex, multi-layered forms within diverse contexts. For a new architectural element to be successfully introduced, it is essential to consider the overall complexity and diversity of its surroundings. To foster inclusivity and community, we embraced the concept that the whole is greater than the sum of its parts. This reflection on the project’s relationship with its site ultimately guided the design approach.

Aligned with the owner’s vision, the residence’s design thoughtfully utilizes the natural terrain and the large trees at the back of the site. Notably, the living room is positioned at the rear to avoid direct views into neighboring houses—a common challenge in low-rise residential areas. Instead, it faces lush greenery, offering both privacy and natural shading. The terrain has been used to create a basement level opening onto the garden. Together, the outdoor swimming pool and the basement (which may be unconventional as a basement due to its exposure) form a central space for family activities and outdoor entertainment.

▲ Underground swimming pool on the first floor
The first-floor design maximizes permeability, allowing the house to open up to the green landscape at the back. This strategy not only responds to site constraints but also creates an illusion of greater depth and length, making the site appear more expansive than it actually is.

▲ Dining area on the first floor
When approaching the house via the long driveway, visitors are greeted not by a solid wall or garage but by an open green space that warmly welcomes residents and guests alike.

▲ Front-facing garage
As a signature achievement of our studio, the entrance experience has been enhanced significantly. Besides providing effective cross ventilation—crucial in our climate—the design allows natural light to flood the bedrooms while framing scenic views.
