The Caixaforum New Cultural Center in Seville tackles the critical challenge of repurposing existing buildings efficiently. It delivers a thoughtfully designed structure by employing strategic site planning and ensuring optimal visibility.

The site strategy is grounded in an analysis of the existing space and previous usage plans of the Pelli Complex’s “podium.” The current structure necessitates the distribution of diverse functions, with each space designed for a specific purpose. This approach results in a series of relatively autonomous internal volumes. Within the existing framework, the strategy seeks to find commonalities in how these spaces are processed and arranged.

Notably, the exhibition hall and auditorium stand out due to their height and size, allowing them to be positioned and divided within independent enclosed elements. This design avoids interference with the original concrete structure. These spaces are located underground, where visitor entry and circulation follow a specific sequence through the building. Meanwhile, the buffet restaurant and administrative areas are situated on the upper level, benefiting from better natural light and visibility.

Another key aspect of the Caixaforum project is enhancing the entrance’s clarity and visibility. The main access points to the exhibition and skylights are sheltered beneath a newly constructed canopy. This design allows natural light to penetrate to the lowest floor, creating a covered plaza among the trees that spans the entire building while providing protection for visitors passing through.
