The Tietgen Dormitory project was commissioned and built by a Nordic Danish fund dedicated to exploring the potential of a “future dormitory” through a clear and visionary architectural concept. Designed to accommodate approximately 400 students, this dormitory sets a new international standard.

Located near the University of Copenhagen in northern Ørestad, the project is set within a recent development characterized by a flowing canal and thoughtfully structured buildings. Its simple circular form harmonizes with the surrounding environment, while the bold architectural expression reflects the latest regional planning achievements.

▲ General layout plan
The project’s dynamic and sculptural character emerges from the overall building form and the organization of individual activities. The circular design symbolizes equality, community, and individuality. Inspiration was drawn from the integration of traditional public, residential, and dormitory building typologies.
The dormitory forms a cylindrical structure surrounding a central courtyard. Residential units are arranged on the upper levels along the outer perimeter, offering views of the surroundings, while public spaces are oriented inward, facing the courtyard. The building’s public areas express a dynamic inward focus, creating a vibrant communal heart.
The residential wings feature varying building depths, resulting in a crystalline exterior facade that highlights the individuality of each unit. At the same time, this design effectively integrates the bold cylindrical shape into the urban context.

An open passageway on the ground floor provides access to the courtyard and vertically divides the building into five sections. Each section contains 12 residential units per floor, arranged around shared public spaces and kitchens. Supporting facilities for the entire dormitory are centralized on the ground floor.
