American architectural firm Axis Mundi presents the XYZ residence, an impressive structure overlooking the Swiss Alps. Its striking form is clad in weather-resistant steel, creating a cross-like silhouette that frames the breathtaking natural surroundings. The design is based on three Cartesian coordinates—X, Y, and Z—arranged as mutually perpendicular planes. These volumes serve diverse purposes: some act as entrance bridges and tunnels, while towers house vertical circulation elements such as stairs and elevators. The main living spaces appear to float effortlessly above the canyon.

The XYZ residence deliberately moves away from traditional material nostalgia. Through this commemorative design, Axis Mundi seeks to evoke the spirit of German Romantic artists like painter Caspar David Friedrich and poet Heinrich Heine. Their works highlight the tension between everyday creativity and the surreal, often supernatural, visions of the future. This project is envisioned as a future ruin, embodying poetic power found in profound silence, offering a contemplative horizon and a timeless sanctuary.
